About Us
In 2007 an article appeared in the Northglen News about a lady that needed
assistance after a traumatic experience and no one was willing to assist her at
the police station, so she was subjected to going back to the abusive situation
with a small child. I realized the immediate need for assistance for victims at
police stations and began to work on the concept of trauma counseling for victims
in the Durban North/Umhlanga area. My aim was to establish some sort of support
system to assist the police and members of the community when having to deal
with traumatic situations.
After investigation I discovered, that there is a desperate need for after hours
counseling for victims of house break-ins, muggings, hijacking, abuse, rape,
drug abuse etc. It was also apparent that policemen and women, who deal with many
traumatic events on a daily basis, were in need of counseling. Armed with this information
I approached Senior Superintendent T. Gonya and Captain B. Mayaba at the Durban North
Police Station who offered their full support to the project.
I have been a voluntary counselor and facilitator for the last 9 years at Life Line
(situated in Adrain Road, Morningside). Life Line specially formulated a course in trauma
counseling for the volunteers and Life Line facillators conducted the training, which was
completed on the 26
th February 2008
The Crisis Team was launched on the 5th of March at a sponsored Cocktail Party and duties officially started on
the 8
th March 2008
